Short Profile

Prof. Olufunke Bolatito Shittu (nee Fajana), was appointed Acting Director of the Biotechnology Centre on March 18, 2022, and was later confirmed after her Professorship was announced.     She holds a B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. Microbiology from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.  She obtained a Ph.D. in Environmental and Public Health Microbiology in 2009 from the now Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria.

As a beneficiary of the Netherlands Fellowship Programme (NFP), she has knowledge, skills, and expertise in “Water Quality Assessment” from UNESCO-IHE Institute of Water Education, Delft, “Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Disease Control Programs” jointly organized by Royal Tropical Institute (KIT), Amsterdam, and International Institute of Geo-information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), Enschede, and “Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System for Water Sector”. Through the sponsorship of GeneConvene Global Collaborative, Foundation for the National Institute of Health (USA), she attended “Gene Editing Course: A Short-Course for African Science Professionals” at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in 2023.  She is a US Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), Sandia National Laboratories / Global Chemical and Biological Security group (SNL/GCBS) certified Biorisk Management Trainer highlighting her commitment to global health security.  She has also attended several university-based training workshops including Biotechnology, Genomics, and Bioinformatics.

She has served the university as Acting Head of the Department of Microbiology (2018-2020) and is currently a member of the University Research Committee (URC), Institutional Bio-Risk Management (IBRM) Committee, and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC)-Anti Corruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit (ACTU).

She is a member of various national and International Professional bodies including Applied Microbiology International, United Kingdom where she is currently serving as a member of the Clean Water Advisory Group (CWAG).  Her research is focused on Water, Environment, and One Health, exploring antimicrobial resistance and infectious disease pathogens, water and food security and safety, microbial toxins and environmental pollutants, and microbial biodiversity.  She has publications in both local and international journals and has attended conferences.
