The Students’ Representative Arm of the Student Union, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has held its 3rd National Legislative Summit, tagged “Sustaining Premium Representation: The Hallmark of Lawmaking”.

Delivering her Address at the event, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Mobolaji Omemu placed on record the good cooperation and collaboration between the legislative arm of Students Legislative Assembly and the Executive arm of the Student Union. 

She noted that the University and the Student Affairs Division are pleased with the students conduct and the sustained relationship with the Students body.

While noting that harmonious relationship between the two arms has given the Student Affairs Division a respite and by extension the Management and the whole University at large, Omemu urged the legislators to continue with the good conduct in their legislative business and to sustain it till the end of their tenure.

Conveying the Management’s appreciation to the legislators over their matured conduct in handling the affairs of legislative business, Prof. Omemu stated that Management’s door is always open to students for any enquiries on personal and educational matters that will improve their total wellbeing.

The Dean, Student Affairs charged them to be good ambassadors of the University at all time, stressing that the legislators should sustain a premium representation because they must be an example of what they say and do.

In his Keynote Speech, a former Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Suraj Adekunbi harped on challenges facing the nation’s constitution, saying that no matter how good the constitution is, if the players of the constitution are bad, it will bring out bad results.

According to him, “The challenges we face now are two pronged: The constitution and practitioners. The workability of a constitution, no matter how good, is determined by the players of the constitution. It can be as effective as we want it to be”.

Rt. Hon. Adekunbi further suggested that attention should be focused on the drafters and enforcers of the constitution in Nigeria. He suggested that leaders should come up with legislations that will respond adequately to the various agitations by various sections of the country, saying that there should be laws which will promote good governance, stimulate socioeconomic growth and robust development that are supposed to take the front burner of the natio’sn constitution.

Earlier in his Welcome Address, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adedayo Afeez lauded the University Management team led by Prof. Felix Kolawole Salako for always paying attention to the yearnings of the student Union stating that the leadership of Prof. Salako is worthy of emulation.

Highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to Rt. Hon. Suraj Adekunbi; Hon. Adeyemi Irekandu, representing Obokun State constituency, Osun State; the Student Affairs Division of the University; Rt. Hon. Adedayo Afeez, Speaker, 26th FUNAABSU SRA. and Farmer Ayopo Somefun an alumni student, who donated ten acres of orange to the university.
