Lack of basic knowledge and skill in the proper handling of crisis is the bane of First Aid treatment, according to the Acting Director, Health Centre, Dr. Abiodun Amusan.
Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of a 2-Day Workshop on First Aid and Handling of First Aid Box, Dr. Amusan disclosed that, “when faced with crisis, you need to do something but more importantly, you need to know what to do, when to do it and what to apply”.
Speaking further at the Workshop organized by Community Based Farming Scheme (COBFAS), the first of its kind for staff at the Industrial Park Unit, Dr. Amusan made it clear that First Aid is a temporary treatment and not a replacement for medical treatment.
Dr. Amusan stressed that the Training is not only vital for handling farm crisis but also very vital for everyday living, noting that it can prevent untimely death and accidents in various homes.
Speaking further, Dr. Amusan, explained why the Training is necessary for the staff of COBFAS stating that “Some of us are Farm Officers and Industrial Workers. The farm exposes us to hazards and accidents do come in the process. Therefore, we felt that a training like this will help the farm officers handle those issues”.
Speaking at the Opening Ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kolawole Salako, represented by the Deputy-Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Morenike Dipeolu commended COBFAS for organizing the Training because First Aid is important and essential.
According to her, knowing how to handle crisis and contain accidents so that it won’t get worse, is very important to the victim, and it’s also helping the system.
She said “This kind of Training is important because it will give you the necessary know-how of handling first aid situations when you are faced with one”.
She charged the First Aid Experts and Resource Persons to always remember that some of the participants are not medical practitioners therefore the lesson should be broken down and explained in normal ordinary terms so that they can comprehend the message.
The Training covered how to handle First Aid Box, Injuries, falls and care at accident scenes, practical demonstration of handling of suspected fractures, Tetanus and treatment of infections, among others. The practical demonstration was done by the Secretary, Odeda Division of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Mr. Adedayo Ayegbokiki and a member Mrs. Oyewumi Aanuolu.
Other activities included in the Workshop were practical demonstration of fresh wounds treatment, practical demonstration of fresh bleeding control, care at accident scenes, practical demonstration of handling of suspected fracture, tetanus and treatment of infections, causes and management of fever, fire outbreak, disaster management, water and food borne diseases symptoms and prevention.
