A Human Resource and Organizational Development Consultant, Mrs. Funmilayo Oyefusi has identified People Management skills as a fundamental prerequisite for effective leadership and organizational progress.
Speaking at an In-House Training for Academic and Senior Non-Teaching Staff of the University Library with the theme, “Effective Leadership Training”, Mrs. Oyefusi emphasized the need for members of staff to be able to manage and accommodate one another for the progress of their organization.
According to her, “As leaders and staff of this Institution, you must learn to manage your team and study your work environment effectively. Do not make others feel less of themselves. Also, find out the vision of your organization and communicate it to others, in order to achieve the goals and vision of the University”.
The Guest Lecturer further stressed the need for members of staff to familiarize themselves with their colleagues, know their team beyond the office and tolerate themselves, stating that as leaders in their respective fields, they will come across different categories of people with different backgrounds, cultures, interactions, ideals, character and attitudes that will be different from theirs.
She enjoined them to equally ensure that they have fun while they work, stressing that the networking and relationship they are able to build at work will help them in their future endeavours.
Earlier in her Remarks, the University Librarian, Dr. Fehintola Onifade stated that the objectives of the training is to build the managerial skills of participants, prepare them for leadership positions and equip them with emotional intelligence skills for effective team management.
Restating the commitment of the University Management to training and re-training of staff for their overall development and the progress of the University, Dr. Onifade said the In-House training will go a long way in achieving the vision of the Prof. Kolawole Salako – led Administration.
According to her, “The University’s culture is to train and re-train our staff because we are known as the Centre of Excellence and we want our staff to be up to the task whereever they find themselves”.
“Though we have capable staff who are doing well but we feel the need to update ourselves in terms of managerial and leadership skills because we are all leaders, and as managerial cadres in the University, it is not out of place to once in a while refresh our skills and brain so that wherever we find ourselves, we will be able to deliver”, she said.
Dr. Onifade commended Library staff for their cooperation and support, stating that their willingness to learn and deliver always has helped made her job much easier. She however admonished them to continue to work together for the development and advancement of the Library and the University, noting that if the Library is moving on, it is to their own success and glory.
In his Remarks, the Registrar, Dr. ‘Bola Adekola, represented by Deputy Registrar II, Senior Non-Teaching Staff Establishment, Mrs. Oluwakemi Banuso, commended the efforts of the Management of the Library and other officers at putting the in-house training together.
He congratulated them for keying into an important component of the Vision of the current University Administration, stating that the Management places high premium on effective leadership.
Emphasizing on the importance of training, the Registrar stated that the success of any organization rests on leadership. He encouraged participants to put in their best and ensure that the training gives rise to highly motivated leaders that will drive the vision of the current Administration for the overall development of the University.
