The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, has charged student footballers to uphold the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship as the University officially flagged off the 2026 Intercollegiate Sports/Vice-Chancellor’s Cup Competition.

Declaring the tournament open today, April 1, 2026, the Vice-Chancellor welcomed all participating teams, including staff and students, while commending their enthusiasm and commitment to the annual sporting event. He stressed the importance of combining academic excellence with physical well-being, noting that “a healthy mind resides in a healthy body.”

Prof. Kehinde encouraged students to actively participate in sports, describing such engagements as essential for fostering teamwork, improving physical fitness, and enhancing interpersonal relationships. While applauding their academic strides, he reminded them that sporting activities remain a vital complement to their overall educational development.

He specifically urged them to play with caution, avoid aggression, and demonstrate mutual respect on the field, stressing that fair play must remain the hallmark of the competition. He concluded by wishing all players a successful outing and expressed optimism that the tournament would be both rewarding and memorable.

The opening ceremony was attended by key University officials, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Olusegun Idowu and the Dean, College of Biosciences (COLBIOS), Prof. Iyabode Kehinde, among other dignitaries, reflecting the University’s strong commitment to sports development and student engagement.

Following the ceremony, the men’s football competition commenced with a series of thrilling and closely contested encounters, as the College of Biosciences (COLBIOS) edged the College of Entrepreneurial and Development Studies (COLENDS) 1–0, the College of Physical Sciences (COLPHYS) secured a narrow 1–0 victory over the College of Plant Science and Crop Production (COLPLANT), the College of Engineering (COLENG) defeated the College of Animal Science and Livestock Production (COLANIM) 1–0, while the College of Computing Sciences (COLCOMPS) also recorded a slim 1–0 win against the College of Veterinary Medicine (COLVET), setting an exciting tone for the tournament.
The matches were keenly contested, showcasing discipline, resilience, and competitive spirit among the teams. The opening day set a positive tone for the tournament, highlighting unity, sportsmanship, and emerging talent across participating Colleges.
