VC Welcomes FUNAAB WAUG Heroes ...Presents Medals, Commends Athletes

The FUNAAB team to this year’s West Africa Universities Game (WAUG) has been commended by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kolawole Salako doing the University proud by winning 9 medals at the just concluded tournament.

Receiving the victorious team at the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Professor Salako appreciated the students for their efforts at winning 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 6 Bronze medals at the Game.

He noted that it is not the number that matters, but the spirit with which they approached the Game and was able to win the medals despite participating in few games, unlike some Universities that came with larger contingents and participated in more games, but could not win the number of medals they carted home.

The Vice-Chancellor charged the students to engage in positive exercise, like sport, because according to him, “When you do things like this, they help your mind.”

Professor Salako also prayed for the team achieve greater success in future competitions, charging the students that as sports personalities, their “Employment might not come from their degree, but from their sporting activities.”

Also, the Vice-Chancellor specially appreciated the Coaching Crew that led the students to the game, under the watchful eyes of the Acting Director of Sports, Dr. Samuel Olabanji for the selflessness and coordination during the Game.

Earlier Dr. Olabanji, who appreciated the Vice-Chancellor and his Management team for their support, said the University went to Port-Harcourt with 19 students and participated in Judo, Chess, Squash, Table Tennis and Scrabble. Where they won a total of 9 medals in all. Recording a feat for FUNAAB’s best outing at an International Competition.

The breakdown of the medals won are, Chees,1 Gold, 1 Silver and 5 Bronze; Squash, 1 Bronze and Table Tennis, 1 Silver.

The highpoint of the meeting was the presentation of WAUG mementos and a personal Gold Medal from the organisers of the event to the Vice-Chancellor.
