The University Librarian (UL), Dr. (Mrs.) Mulikat Salaam has charged parents to watch less television so they could be good examples to their children. Rather, they should instil in them the culture of reading.

Speaking at the 2012/2013 Prize-Giving Day Ceremony held in the school premises, Dr. (Mrs.) Salaam stated that although Nigeria’s culture does not promote reading, parents should encourage their children to read.

According to her, “Not when they are preparing for examinations but they should read everyday. How can you tell your children to read when you too are glued to the television set for hours?”

She advised, “And if they are to watch television, let them watch educative programmes. I remember when my children were growing up; I allow them to watch Sesame Street, only”.

The Dean-elect, College of Environmental Resources Management (COLERM), Professor Clement Adeofun, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olusola Oyewole,

also advised pupils to be good ambassadors of the School.

Earlier, the Head teacher, Mrs. Florence Alade appreciated the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olusola Oyewole for hastening the relocation of the School from Isale-Igbein to the gigantic and modern edifice near the University Campus.

Mrs. Alade was elated that the outgoing pupils had already secured admission into various notable secondary schools in the country, adding that the pupils had never went out for competitions without winning prizes.

Alluding to the maxim that says, ‘A tree does not make a forest’, she acknowledged the cooperation of the members of staff in achieving the laudable feat.

Commending the parents for their perseverance, the Headteacher stated that, “you are highly appreciated for your endurance and understanding especially at the early stage of our relocation when there were challenges with transportation.

She prayed that as they proceed to the secondary school, the outgoing Primary Six Pupils will excel in their Academics, bring fame to the School as well as joy to their parents.

In his address, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic and the Chief Host at the Ceremony, Professor Toyin Arowolo who was represented by the Director, Academic Planning, Professor Adekojo Waheed noted the significance of the day to the Pupils, saying that later in life the children would think of it and would be highly delighted.

He thanked the parents for their efforts on the children, praying that it will not be in vain. “They are the hope of the town, the state, the country and the world at large”, he declared.

Corroborating the earlier statements, the Chairman of the day, Professor Babatunde Idowu said that the role of the parents in the present day Nigeria was enormous, adding that parents should be friends to their children. “Chase money a little and pay more attention to them”, he charged. He admonished husbands to encourage their wives at home as they prepare good meals for them, to be good mothers, stating that “the best teachers are our mothers”.

In her Farewell Speech, the outgoing Head Girl, Miss Ifeoluwa Alebiosu thanked the School’s Management for their support, pledging that they would always look back to their Alma mater. Highpoint of the ceremony was the presentation of prizes, testimonials and certificates to the pupils as well as awards to deserving staff.
