The Vice- Chancelor, Prof. Kolawole Salako has lamented the sharp decline in the reading habit of students even as he described Book-writing as an important way to document knowledge.
Speaking at the launching of a Book titled, “Seed Production Technology” written by Prof. Dupe Akintobi of the Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Technology (PBST), College of Plant Science and Crop Production (COLPLANT), the Vice-Chancellor noted that writing requires a lot of efforts.
According to him, “I know writing this book would have taken a lot of efforts, so I congratulate Prof. Akintobi. Nonetheless, we should learn to document because reading requires a lot of discipline”.
However, Prof. Salako lamented that despite the painstaking efforts that are committed into book writing ,the decline in the reading habit of students is alarming.
He expressed concern that youths of today easily divert to doing other unprofitable things online.
The Vice-Chancellor equally noted that not too many are in the writing business anymore because we believe that all we want can be gotten from the internet.
Giving a vivid review of the Book, Prof. Malachy Akoroda of the Plant and Horticultural Science Department, University of Ibadan (UI) said the Book met all the requirements needed for publication.
According to him, “This is the first book in Seed Production. It has an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) and can be accessed in any of the Nigerian National Libraries. It has enough to explain to any student who wants to read and understand what seed production is all about”.
Prof. Akoroda added that the book has tried in linking several Seed Scientists because of its verse references, brief and concise content which can teach any interested persons how to produce seeds which includes; planting, harvesting the seed without any injury and storage.
Launching the book, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Bolanle Akeredolu-Ale described the writer as someone who has achieved by putting her feet in the sand of time, congratulating her for her relentless efforts towards achieving her goal.
Responding, Prof. Akintobi in her response acknowledged the Almighty for seeing her through the challenges she faced while writing the book.
