Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) has inducted Thirty(30) Graduands of the University’s College of Veterinary Medicine( COLVET).
The young Veterinarians are expected to contribute immensely to the growth of livestock industry in Nigeria and in diaspora by boosting food security among other developmental indices.
The ceremony which was jointly organized by the College under the aegis of the University and the Veterinary Council of Nigeria(VCN) is the 12th Induction and Oath-Taking ushering in the new inductees into the noble profession, after six years of hard work, dedication and commitment to rigorous trainings.
Delivering his Keynote Address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Felix Kolawole Salako, who was represented by Chairman, Committee of Deans and Directors (CODAD) and Dean, College of Plant Science and Crop Production (COPLANT), Prof. Muftau Atayese, pointed out that the University has forged an effective collaboration with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control(NAFDAC) to assist in checking the safety of livestock products for human consumption.
Professor Salako said: “In order to promote and ensure impartation of sound academic and professional training to our Veterinarians, the Management of this University has been magnanimous in furnishing COLVET with high technology equipments, four (4) laboratories at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, namely: Food Safety Laboratory; Diagnostic Imaging (X-ray) Digital X-ray with Automatic Film Processor; Virology Diagnostic Laboratory and Clinical Microbiology Diagnostic Laboratory.
He added that “Of particular importance is the Food Safety Laboratory where collaboration with NAFDAC has been established to assist in checking the livestock products for human consumption.”
Prof. Salako further disclosed that a quarantine facility with an inbuilt grazing area has been established as a model for owners of feedlot cattle which aimed at addressing issues of national importance.
The Vice-Chancellor enjoined the Veterinary Council of Nigeria to increase the admission quota of students from 30 to 60 for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine programme in FUNAAB.
In her speech, the President, Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), and Guest Lecturer who is the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Force Animal Branch at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, AIG Dr. Aishatu Abubakar described veterinary profession as an age-long calling, noting that the profession has grown from strength to strength in Nigeria over the years.
AIG Abubakar congratulated the new inductees, charging them to duly register with VCN and to also observe the ethics of the profession faithfully.
She reminded the new Doctors that Veterinary Medicine is a noble profession, which requires them to reflect nobility.
The AIG commended FUNAAB for bequeathing a great training legacy to the young Veterinarians, urging the College not to relent on its oars in training the upcoming ones.
Earlier in his Welcome Address, the Dean, College of Veterinary Medicine (COLVET), Prof. Adebayo Akinloye appreciated the University Management for supporting the College in working assiduously to secure full accreditation status.
According to him, “In the last National Universities Commission (NUC) and Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) accreditation exercise held in 2019, the College sustained its full accreditation status”.
Prof Akinloye further noted that from 2019 till date, the College has achieved a lot despite COVID-19 pandemic scare in the world.
According to him, the achievements are; creation of three additional Departments in the College, acquisition of more than 30 new different equipment and provision of quarantine facilities.
