The Centre for Community-Based Farming Scheme (COBFAS) of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has recorded another significant milestone in its drive towards sustainable agriculture and food security with a bumper harvest of tomatoes.

The tomato production project, which commenced on April 4, 2026, yielded impressive results within three months, underscoring the effectiveness of modern agricultural practices and the value of strategic partnerships in boosting food production.

During a media tour of the farm, the Director of COBFAS, Prof. Dare Akerele, attributed the success of the project to the unwavering support of the University Management, the contributions of development partners, and the dedication of the Scheme’s agricultural personnel.

According to him, the commitment of the Agricultural Officers to routine agronomic practices played a vital role in achieving the remarkable harvest. He also expressed appreciation to Soilless Farm for sponsoring the construction of the greenhouse facility, describing the partnership as instrumental to the project’s success.

Building on the success of the tomato enterprise, COBFAS has intensified its food security efforts through the cultivation of maize on approximately eight hectares of land.

Prof. Akerele disclosed that the maize project received substantial support from the University Management as well as a donation of six 200-kilogramme bags of Oba Super-6 hybrid maize seeds from Premier Seed. He noted that the variety is a high-yielding hybrid enriched with Pro-Vitamin A and possesses drought-tolerant qualities capable of enhancing both productivity and nutritional value.

Expressing optimism about the project, the Director stated that the University could look forward to a bountiful maize harvest within the next three months, provided weather conditions remain favourable. He further commended the agricultural officers and tractor operators for their commitment and hard work in the successful establishment of the maize farm. Prof. Akerele also appreciated the Directorate of Public Relations for its consistent efforts in publicising COBFAS activities and keeping stakeholders informed of the Scheme’s achievements.

Looking ahead, he revealed plans to strengthen dry-season farming operations to ensure a steady supply of farm produce to members of the University Community and residents of neighbouring communities.

Describing the achievements recorded so far as “just a tip of the iceberg,” Prof. Akerele expressed confidence that greater support and investment would enable COBFAS to attain even higher levels of agricultural productivity and impact in the years ahead.

Meanwhile, freshly harvested tomatoes would be available for sale on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 1,500 per kg between 10 a.m. and 12 noon at the Bus Stop opposite the Directorate of Public Relations for the next one month.
