Engineering is Everything …Guest Lecturer

One Hundred and Sixteen Engineering (116) graduates were recently inducted as Graduate Members of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), during the 4th Induction Ceremony of the 2016/2017 Engineering graduates of the University.

Speaking at the occasion, the Guest Lecturer, Engineer (Dr.) Kolawole Olonade defined Engineering as the use of scientific principle to produce something, in order to benefit human and solve problems.

He added that Engineering is everything and everything is engineering.

Engineer Olonade made this assertion while giving a lecture titled, “Making Engineering A Career” where he described Career as the profession one chooses to pursue throughout a life time.

According to the Lecturer, Engineering is not a profession to be abandoned for another, noting that it is a profession that helps a person make use of both sides of the brain, thereby making the individual more successful.

He added that Engineering gives you new experiences daily, helps you interact with people and will also give the individual the opportunity to travel around the world.

The Lecturer also disclosed that it is a highly rewarding profession with better opportunities which makes employment certain for its graduates, adding that an Engineer cannot lack employment as he can work in other profession.

Engineer Olonade said further that Engineering is very relevant in nation building as every government talks about infrastructure, observing that Nigeria is developing geometrically and if maintained, in about 10 years time, it will surpass China.

He noted that Engineers are needed everywhere, manbila project, sea/airport, rail ways, communication facility and health sections.

The lecturer implored the inductees to continue to be Engineers and practice Engineering, saying that they must make themselves relevant by continuing to add value to themselves through learning, attending of workshops, conferences, seminars and by interacting and networking with senior colleagues. He noted that they must practice for at least four years before they can become full-fledged Engineers and be registered.

Engineer Olonade further charged them to acquire additional skills that will make them employable like very good communication skills which according to him, will help them in writing reports and proposals, noting that the University has given them master key but they must open the door, in order to succeed.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kolawole Salako in his Keynote Address congratulated the parents and the inductees, saying that it was by the mercies of God that they were able to finish well.

He likened Engineers to footballers who must remain focus in order to dribble their ways to success. The Vice-Chancellor was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development Professor Lateef Sanni.

In his Welcome Address, the Dean of the college of Engineering, Professor Johnson Adewunmi appreciated the parents for all the funds they expended on the graduates training, enjoining the inductees to make adequate use of what they were taught while in the University.

Speaking at the event, the President of NSE, Engineer Adekunle Mokuolu stated that while the University trains academically, the Society of Engineers handles the practice and regulates the profession, in order to avoid mistakes.

According to the President, all graduate members must write examination which they must pass before NSE will certify them, advising them to link up with any NSE branch nearest to them, so that their one year national service will not be wasted.

The President also disclosed that the Federal Government has approved an enhanced salary scale for Engineers as it applies to other professionals. He was represented by the Director Center for Entrepreneurial study (CENTS) Professor Babatunde Adewunmi of COLENG, FUNAAB.
In his Valedictory Speech, the President of National University Engineering Students Association (NUESA) Oladipo Akinwale called for urgent need for intervention on student’s scholarship noting that the responsibility of leading had made him a better person.

Highlights of the event included, oath taking and induction of the graduates into NSE and decoration of the inductees with some symbols of the tools of Engineering.

Present at the occasion were the Registrar, Dr. Bola Adekola, the University Librarian, Dr. Fehintola Onifade, Director AMREC, Professor Dorcas Adegbite, Director Institute for Human Resources and Development (INHURD) Professor Moses Arigbede, former Dean, College of Engineering, Professor Emmanuel Ajisegiri, Chairman NSE, Abeokuta branch Engineer Mohammed Abass and top staff of COLENG, among others.
