FUNAAB Graduates Become CPN Professionals

The 2018/2019 B.Sc Computer Science graduating set of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has been inducted into the Computer Professional (Registration Council of Nigeria) CPN at the 5th CPN Induction Ceremony held in FUNAAB

In his Remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kolawole Salako represented by Dr. (Mrs.) Fehintola Onifade, Librarian, congratulated the inductees and advised them to see their induction as a call to integrity. He admonished them to strive to be the best in their profession and stand out as it appeals to mankind. Prof. Salako further encouraged the inductees to uphold the ethics of their profession and advised them to be good ambassadors of FUNAAB wherever they find themselves.

Meanwhile, Prof. Olusegun Folorunsho, Head of Department, Computer Science in his opening remarks disclosed that the Department which was formerly an arm of the then Department of Mathematical Sciences, was established in 1988 at the inception of the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB). He stressed that over the years, the Department of Computer Science has evolved to become a unique academic division in the production of highly-trained graduates and postgraduate students in the field of Computer Science.

Prof. Folorunsho while speaking on his achievements as the first substantive Head of Department since the creation of Computer Science Department in 2006, stated that since he assumed office, he has embarked on the mission of making the Department a leading world-class computing department nationally and internationally with the help of all stakeholders in the Department.

“As the Head of Department, I formulated a policy statement with a 7-point agenda which was set out as my roadmap for the achievement of a world-class status for the Department through visionary leadership, staff and students welfare, commitment to quality and excellence in teaching, fundraising through innovative ideas and grant winning, teaching with skills and competencies for meaningful learning, community engagement (Town and gown), and collaborative partnership and internationalization”, he stated.

He added that recently, the Department has also instituted a quality assurance group to maintain the standard of the graduates that are being sent to the labour market at every session for national development, stressing that ICT projects and consortium that can yield internally-generated revenue has also been introduced and is currently on implementation stage.

The Head of Department however appreciated the efforts of the previous Heads of Department for steering the affairs of the Department in the right direction, stating that their focused, goal oriented and astute academic skills have helped moved the Department to greater heights.

Giving his lecture titled “Professionalism and Career Development in Information Technology (IT)”, CITP Adekunle Durosinmi, Registrar, Dots ICT Institute of Technology, Abeokuta emphasized on the importance of IT in the world today, stating that ICT has now become an indispensable aspect of every profession.

According to him, ” the uniqueness of the IT profession has shown that no other profession has attracted so much interprofessional interest as IT. Everyone is using our tools to grow in all sectors of the economy, including the entertainment industry. More and more organizations, government agencies and individuals has continued to depend on IT for their day-to-day operations and this is an evidence that the profession will continue to be relevant in future”.

He however encouraged the inductees to be always ready to meet the demands of their profession and constantly update their knowledge in order to continue to be relevant. He maintained that other professionals such as Architects, accountants and engineers among many others look forward to them to provide solutions to their IT problems.

CITP Durosinmi further implored them to be abreast of public policy and changes in social theory, maintain personal and professional integrity, utilize available technology to protect private information and constantly motivate themselves to take on greater personal and social responsibilities in order to relevant in their field.

Speaking on the importance of the Induction Ceremony, he revealed that the Induction of the inductees into CPN will give them the chance to write the Computer Professional Examination (CPE) which is the third stage of being a qualified member of CPN, stating that the CPN Professional examination is divided into three stages of Computer Literacy Examination (CLE), Computer Foundation Examination (CFE) for 100 level students and CPE for graduates and inductees.

Highpoints of the ceremony was presentation of certificate to the inductees and an award presentation to the best graduating student of the 2018/2019 Set, Miss Eniola Nafeesat Jimoh with a 4.22 CPGA and was offered a scholarship by CPN to write the CPE 3 examination.

Also present at the event were Dr. Bola Adekola, Registrar represented by Mr. Omowon Agbotoba, Prof. Bukola Onashoga, Coordinator, CPN, Southwest, Registrar, CPN, Mr. Mohammed Aliyu represented by Mrs. Elizabeth Adekunle among others.
