FUNAAB Has Digitalised SIWES Operations….Prof. George

As part of measures to make Industrial Training Programme students-friendly and accessible to stakeholders in general, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has digitalized the operations of Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) to enhance service delivery.

The University Director of SIWES, Prof. Mrs Francisca George disclosed this at the 2019/2020 SIWES Orientation Programme for Agriculture students. 

She made the disclosure just as the Deputy Vice Chancellor(Academics), Prof. Bolanle Akeredolu-Ale  urged the students who are embarking on  Industrial Training Programme to see the period as an opportunity to learn and be motivated.

Represented by Prof Petra Saghir- Abdulsalam, Director, FUNAAB Universal Conservices Limited(FUCONS), Prof. Akeredolu-Ale implored the students to work towards fulfilling their individual career objectives, and not just focus on the objectives of SIWES alone. 

She encouraged them to be committed to their duties and ensure they build strong and lasting relationships towards fulfilling their future goals and career.

In her presentation titled, “Stakeholders And Their Roles In SIWES Programme”, the Area Manager, Industrial Training Fund(ITF), Abeokuta office, Mrs. Funmi Coker disclosed that the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment and ITF are tasked with responsibility for the implementation of SIWES.

She stressed that the ITF is saddled with the responsibilities of regularly organising orientation programmes for students prior to their attachments, and supervising and assessing students’ performance among others.

Mrs. Coker further advised them to be good ambassadors of their institution and family, be obedient to organizational rules and regulations, be neatly dressed and to be of good moral conduct to avoid any form of abuse.

Earlier, the Director, SIWES, Prof. Francisca George disclosed that SIWES operations in FUNAAB has been digitalized to enable students on Industrial Attachment to register and fill their log books online through their individual portal.

She however noted that the digitalization of the SIWES programme online was introduced for students’ convenience and to eliminate the habit of students constantly forgetting to fill in their daily activities assuring that the hardcopy filing of log books will not be discarded totally.

Addressing the students on “Keeping Fit and Maintaining Optimal Health”, the Director, Health Services, Dr. Abiodun Amusan represented by Dr. Dayo Oduwole, advised the students to see their health as a key element in achieving success during their SIWES programme.

He encouraged them to keep close tab on their health and not wait till they fall sick before taking care of themselves.

On her part, the Dean, Student Affairs, Prof. Mobolaji Omemu admonished the participants to be good representatives of the University stressing that if they do anything contrary to the rules and regulations of the school they will be punished accordingly. 

Meanwhile, a total of 1,250 students from 16 Departments in the College of Agricultural Management and Rural Development (COLAMRUD), College of Animal Nutrition and Livestock Production (COLANIM), College of Environmental Resources Management (COLERM), and College of Plant Science and Crop Production (COLPLANT) participated in the programme.
