Students of the University’s entrepreneurial club have recorded a giant feat by bagging second position in the Entrepreneurial Action for others create a better world for Us all (ENACTUS) competition.
According to University’s ENACTUS Team Leader, Miss. Oluwadamilola Ogunkoyi, a 400 level student of the Department of Animal Production and Health, 12 students of the University participated in the impactful project on girl child education titled ‘ONE GIRL, ONE WORLD’ to achieve the feat.
Explaining the modalities of the project, Oluwadamilola said her team worked on impacting in the lives of 50 families in Shepeteri community located in Shaki where the education of the girl child is not encouraged. She said her team’s activities included dissuading the families to stop the tradition but rather encourage the girl child to seek for knowledge through formal education.
“We were able to penetrate and educate them, we took videos and got statistics which we presented at the Civic Centre in Lagos between July 10 and July 11, where we emerged second among 10 other Universities and was given a cash prize of 300 thousand Naira”.
Oluwadamilola disclosed that ENACTUS is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring students to improve the world through entrepreneurial action.
Speaking on the ENACTUS initiative, the Director, Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies (CENT), Professor Babatunde Adewumi described it as a very good entrepreneurial movement for students to showcase their entrepreneurial skills and talent.
He commended the University for supporting the Entrepreneurship club, saying “if not for the integration of the student entrepreneurship club, the students wouldn’t have performed excellently but the training and support given to the students by the Club Leaders and University motivated them to perform well”.
The Director further explained the importance of the student entrepreneurship club which he said was being used to make the students and community more aware of entrepreneurship and particularly to understand the concept so that people will be fulfilled entrepreneurs when they graduate.
According to him, “We don’t want our training to be theory based, we want to translate all the courses we do in this university into business so that they can be trained well and start a business after school. This will help the University ensure the best set of graduates”.
