The Department of Geology in the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta kicked-off in 2020 and it is established to provide skilled manpower in the field of Geology and Geological Sciences. Geology students and graduates from the department will be relevant in a lot of geologically related activities, such as quarrying, mineral exploitation, as well as surface water utilization. There are also prospects for exploitation of oil and gas, as well as bitumen deposits in the coastal areas of Ogun and Lagos States.
One of the major reasons for the establishment of the Department of Geology is to bridge the identified skill gap in the relevant industries and the catchment area of the University, which overlaps with that of FUNAAB. The Department is being run in line with the current international trends and undergraduate students are exposed as widely as possible in the field of geology, with a focus on relevant disciplines of interest. Geology graduates from the Department will be qualified for positions in the following areas:
- Solid Mineral Industries
- Petroleum Industries
- Engineering and Construction Industries
- Water and Mineral Exploration and Exploitation
- Environmental Consulting and Planning
- Relevant Federal Ministries, Parastatal and Establishments
- Relevant State Ministries, Parastatal and Establishments
- Local Government Commission
Philosophy
The philosophy of the programme is the training of students and the production of skilled manpower that can develop and apply relevant technologies to solve geo-environmental problems related to:
- exploration and exploitation of mineral resources for sustainable development
- exploration of natural resources (geothermal energy, hot spring, surface water, groundwater, fossil fuels, minerals and rocks)
- investigation and remediation of contaminated soil and agricultural lands, as well as surface water and groundwater contamination,
- mitigation of geo-hazards (earthquake, debris flow, slope instability, erosion, waste disposal, climate change),
- prevention of deterioration of geological environment, and
- soil mineral nutrient depletion and management using knowledge of Geology.
The trained students shall have a broad education, based in the real world, so that they can work with engineers, planners and environmental managers as they look for solutions to geo-environmental issues, exploitation and management of natural resources. Many of the geo-environmental problems have major financial implications, therefore a thorough awareness of sound commercial and consultancy practice shall be impacted on the students.
Objectives
State the aims and objectives of the proposed programme. Please note that it must be in line with the National Policy on Education and within the bounds of the mission of the university.
The objectives of the proposed department are:
- To provide students with a broad and balanced foundation of Geology knowledge and practical skills.
- To develop in students the ability to apply knowledge and skills to solving theoretical and practical problems in Geology.
- To provide the skills and tools needed to identify, understand and resolve geo-environmental problems.
- To produce high quality research and teaching.
- To give awareness and provide mitigation strategies on geological matters.
