In an attempt to further beef-up security on the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) campus, the University Management has embarked on illuminating the University, by inaugurating Task Force on Campus Illumination charged with the responsibility of checking the street lights and other security lights on campus, to ascertain their functionality. The Chairman of the Task Force on Campus Illumination, Professor Clement Adeofun who spoke extensively on the activities of the task force revealed that the idea was birthed due to the worrisome state of insecurity on some major University campuses in the country.

According to Professor Adeofun, “The University management in its wisdom and the Vice-Chancellor being a proactive leader set up the Task-Force on Campus Illumination, when it discovered that the campus was always very dark at night, with most of the street lights always having one problem or the other”.

To get the job done properly and effectively, he said that the Task Force commenced by carrying out a reconnaissance survey of the campus and discovered that some of the works just needed minor repairs, some replacing of bulbs and others, replacing of cables.

Furthering on that, Professor Adeofun revealed that his team phased out the work into three phases in order of importance, where phase one involved the fixing of the lights in the Boulevard, the Students’ areas and the Ring Road.

The second phase according to him involved, “Monitoring of Solar Panel in some strategic areas to guarantee 24 hours light on campus, with or without Power from the Power Holding Company. And phase three is to embrace new areas like the Farm Road and the Female Hostel, popularly known as Marble Hostel, which presently do not have facilities for a lighting system.

He said that the Task Force had been directed to focus their attention on the 1,000-seater hall which will host the forth-coming Academic Staff Union of Universities National Executive Council (ASUU-NEC) meeting.

Professor Adeofun appreciated the University management for its support on the work so far, and revealed that the University and the Task Force are already getting commendation from students, based on what has been done so far.
