2025 Staff Unity Games: Thrills, Skills, Medals as Tournament Heats Up

The 2025 Staff Unity Games of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) have continued to gather momentum, with staff members from various Colleges and Units engaging in electrifying contests across multiple sporting events. The Games, which promote physical wellness, camaraderie, and institutional unity, have entered an exciting phase marked by skilful displays and intense rivalries.

Day 3 Recap – Wednesday, July 9, 2025

The third day featured keenly contested events in Football, Table Tennis, Badminton, Chess, and Tennis.

In Football , the Postgraduate School/ICT team battled to a draw against the INHURD/COBFAS/IFSERAR/DUFARMS side, eventually triumphing 4-3 in a penalty shootout. Similarly, the COLBIOS team edged out the Vice-Chancellor’s Office team 5-3 on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Table Tennis (Female) saw Mrs. David Olaleye (COLENDS) narrowly defeated Mrs. Ibukun Akinloye (Health Centre) 2-1, while Prof. Iyabode Kehinde (COLBIOS) defeated Mrs. Olabosede Takeet (COLVET) with the same scoreline. In the Men’s category, the Works and Services representative overwhelmed Prof. Babatunde Idowu (COLBIOS) 3-0, while COLENG’s player defeated Mr. Ishola Adefowora (Bursary) 3-0.

In Badminton (Female), Mrs. Anuoluwapo Oyewumi (COLENDS) overcame Miss Damilola Akinsanya (DUFARMS), while in Chess, Mr. Kperegbeyi Toritsereju (Library) and Mr. Adewole Oduwole emerged as male champions, set for finals. Mrs. Oluwakemi Ogunyemi (VC’s Office) took home the Gold in the Female category.

Tennis matches also kicked off with preliminary rounds that drew enthusiastic participation across Departments.

Day 4 Highlights – Thursday, July 10, 2025

The competition intensified on Day 4, with thrilling action in Football, Squash, Badminton, Tennis, Chess, and Table Tennis.

In Football , COLPLANT delivered a dominant 3-0 performance over the COLENG/Staff School/FUNIS team, while the ICT/PG School/Health Centre/Library team edged past Works/Sheriff Deputies 4-3 on penalties following a draw.

🥈 Silver: Mrs. David Olaleye (COLENDS) def. Mrs. Oluwayemisi Jenrade (DUFARMS)

🥉 Bronze: Mrs. Owoseni (Registry) def. Mrs. Christine Awe-Mathias (COLVET)

🔺 Table Tennis (Male):

👉 Prof. Michael Takeet (COLVET) defeated Mr. Patrick Erinoso (Bursary) 3-0

👉 Mr. Alamu (COLENG) def. Mr. Awofeso (PG School) 3-0

👉 Mr. Ikudaisi (Works and Services) def. Mr. Adenekan (INHURD) 3-0

Squash (Men’s Quarterfinals):

Mr. Festus Dada (VC’s Office) defeated Mr. Obinde (INHURD)

Mr. Olaoye Oyewole (Bursary) defeated Mr. Quadri (Works and Services)

Mr. Victor Opakunle (Bursary) defeated Mr. Adenekan (INHURD)

Dr. Olushola Adeleye (COLVET) defeated Mr. Bright Obiriwonsi (VC’s Office)

Tennis (Men’s Semifinals):

Engr. Francis Opeodu (Works and Services) vs Mr. Lukmon Adebanjo (COLFHEC)

Mr. Olaoye Oyewole (Bursary) vs Prof. Jelili Ladebo (COLAMRUD)

The Women’s Tennis category has also commenced, with the finals scheduled for Monday, July 14, 2025.

Speaking on the significance of the Games, the Director of Sports, Dr. Samuel Olabanji, emphasised the importance of integrating sports into daily life to promote physical and mental well-being. He urged staff to participate wholeheartedly, embracing the Games as a platform for teamwork, fun, and University unity, not just a contest.

As the tournament advances, it has continued to reflect FUNAAB’s holistic approach to development, reinforcing the balance between academic excellence and vibrant extracurricular engagement.
