The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Felix Kolawole Salako has stressed the need for the immediate use of newly completed building on campus to avoid underutilisation.
The Vice-Chancellor made this charge when he paid on the spot assessment visit to completed and ongoing projects on campus.
Prof. Salako wondered why some members of staff and students are complaining of lack of Seminar/ Conference Rooms, Offices and Lecture Halls when quite a number of such are lying fallow in new building on campus.
During the tour, Prof. Salako pointed out that the completed buildings, some of which houses conference rooms, lecture halls and various offices should not be subjected to underutilisation, noting that some lecturers and students who complain of no space to hold their Seminars should access such buildings.
Some of the completed projects visited are the newly-built Academic Building, Library Extension Building and the Agricultural Farm Laboratory Complex. Other places visited are the Seed Processing Building located in the University Farm as well as the ongoing 250-Seater Auditorium behind the College of Management Sciences (COLMAS).
FUNAAB CMS Elects Omisope as President
Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Staff Cooperative Multipurpose Society Limited has elected new executives to paddle the leadership of the co-operative society for another two years.
While announcing the result, the Chairman of Electoral Committee, Mr. Adetokunbo Olopade appreciated all Cooperators for the maturity exhibited during the election, stressing that contestants should see the result as no loser, no winner.
For the position of President, Mrs. Margaret Omisope emerged winner having polled a total number of 493 votes, while Mr. Fatokun Jonathan, the outgoing President secured 211 of the total votes cast.
Other elected officers of the Society are, Mr. Oladipo Oluwatudimu, Vice President; Mr. Sulaimon Idris, Secretary; Mrs. Tawakalitu Ayelotan as Treasurer. Mr. Olufemi Fayemi; Mr. Adeniyi Folawewo; Mrs. Olufunmilayo Olanloye; Mrs. Mary Agbolade; Mrs. Yetunde Soetan-Yusuf and Mr. Bolaji Balogun who all became Committee Members of the Multi-Purpose Society.
Respect FUNAAB’s Security Personnel
… Don’t Feel Inferior to Anybody
– VC Charges Staff, Security Personnel Respectively
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kolawole Salako has charged members of the University Community to respect the institution’s security personnel and not to look down on them.
Prof. Salako gave the charge even as he encouraged the security personnel never to feel inferior to anyone because every member of the University Community is important for enhanced service delivery in the system.
According to him, “Security men are not to be looked down on but should be respected. Everyone is important for the effective operation of the system and so you must not feel inferior but always remember that you have a role to play”, he added.
Speaking on Ethical Issues in the University, the Vice-Chancellor condemned the habit of hindering individuals freedom, stating that everyone has the right to be free.
He charged them to avoid using their freedom unethically, stating that though they have the right to complain, they must know the nature of their job, do it carefully and not use it to disrupt the activities of the System.
His words: “you have the right to complain, but do it in the right way and do not use it to disrupt the activities of the system. You can belong to a Union but you must also know the nature of the job you are doing.
“Meanwhile, in spite of the freedom you have, avoid using it unethically. Everyone has the right to be free and to exist in life but always remember that the limit of freedom is freedom”.
The Vice-Chancellor further enjoined the security personnel to adopt the use of Social Media as they have become
veritable source of information, adding that the world is currently at a stage where the youths are a step ahead of everyone.
He encouraged them to acquire the needed knowledge and adopt the ability of using technology, stating that communication is an effective tool for the smooth operations of their job.
Emphasizing the importance of security personnel, Prof. Salako harped on the need for their physical presence, stressing that they are important in the operations of technical gadgets and machines needed for carrying out their jobs.
He however commended the Chief Security Officer, Mr. Bolarinwa Peter and security officers in general for their dedication and reminded them that their total welfare is important to the University Management.
In his Address, the Dean, COLAMRUD, Prof. Emmanuel Fakoya appreciated the University Management for organising the Workshop in an enabling environment, stating that the Training will go a long way in equipping the participants for better output in their various assignments and offices.
He also commended the Department of Communication and General Studies for their thoughtfulness in organising the Security and Leadership Training, noting that the training is timely because it came at a time when the society deserves instant solution to various challenges confronting peace and security in the country.
Prof. Fakoya however harped on the importance of peace and security in the society, stressing that a society that lacks peace and security of lives and properties will lead to a failed society.
Earlier in her Welcome Address, the Head of Department, Communication and General Studies, Prof. Comfort Onifade stated that the Workshop is coming at a time when there are threats to human lives and properties, security and to the entire nation.
She stressed the importance of security to human existence, stating that a peaceful environment is needed for the citizens in achieving and attaining the society of their dream.
According to her, “we all desire a peaceful environment that allows for everyone to meet his or her potentials as much as possible, therefore, security is paramount to human existence, in order to achieve and attain the kind of society of our dream”.
Prof. Onifade further stated that the constant training and re-training of security personnel is necessary to equip them for optimal productivity, pointing out that the burden of actualizing security of lives and properties lies mostly with them.
While stating that one of the core mandates of the Department is the running and coordination of Short-Term Certificate and Proficiency Courses, Seminars, Conferences and Workshops for Staff and other people in the immediate environment of the University in Language and Communication Skills, she noted that the Security Workshop is one of the ways through which the Department can help contribute to an all-round development of the University and to national security.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Bolanle Akeredolu-Ale in her Lecture titled “Effective Interviewing Skills” reminded the participants of their duty in promoting and maintaining safety and lawful behaviour on campus, stating that as security personnel in a learning environment with its peculiarities, their role is special because of the uniqueness of their audience.
Prof. Akeredolu-Ale who spoke in
her capacity as a Professor in the Department of Communication and General Studies encouraged the security officers to ensure they acquire distinctive skills especially interviewing skills, in order to excel on the job, stressing that they are expected to display and exhibit such when dealing with the public.
She charged them to ensure that they are aware of the changing patterns in the society, in order to be ahead of others in information gathering.
Prof. Akeredolu-Ale however enjoined them to practice constantly their interviewing skills as security professionals, be open to guidance, not to stop learning, build rapport through shared experiences and be well prepared, in order to succeed in eliciting useful information.
Lectures were also presented by Prof. Helen Bodunde on the topic, “Professional Attitude For Security Men” while Dr. Temitope Olaifa spoke on the topic, “The Concept of Security “, and Dr. Emmanuel Ademola on the “Concept of Peace and Security”, among others.
