The College of Physical Sciences (COLPHYS), Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB) commenced its 2024 2nd Biennial International Conference today, March 19, 2024, with an Opening Ceremony held at the Red Chamber.
Themed “Scientific Innovations and Developments: Scenic Route to Sustainable Development, Economy, and Security,” the event aimed to explore the important role of scientific advancements in driving global progress.
In his Address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde extended a warm welcome to all participants, emphasising the significance of collaborative knowledge-sharing among colleagues.
Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Olukayode Akinyemi, the Vice-Chancellor underscored the vital role of generating scientific and technological knowledge in fostering economic growth and addressing societal challenges.
Highlighting FUNAAB’s recent accolades as the Best University of Agriculture in Africa and the 7th Best in the world by the Times Higher Education World Universities Ranking, Prof. Kehinde encouraged attendees to embrace curiosity and innovation, expressing his hopes for a fruitful exchange of ideas during the Conference, and fostering meaningful connections among participants.
The Keynote Address, delivered by Prof. Samuel Oluwafemi from the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, explored the theme “Sustaining the MACRO World and Economy through NANO World: The Wonders of Nanomaterials.”
Additionally, Prof. Olaniyi Fawole delivered a lecture, titled “Innovation in Bioresource Transformation and Utilisation for Sustainable Food and Nutrition Security,” shedding light on post-harvest practices, agro-processing, and waste valorization.
The Guest Speaker who is the Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu stressed the pivotal role of scientific innovation in national development.
Commending FUNAAB for its outstanding reputation, Prof. Arigbabu noted the importance of integrating agricultural and physics research to address contemporary challenges.
Earlier in his Welcome Address, the Dean of COLPHYS, Prof. Adio Akinwale, expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor for his support in organising the Conference and announced an In-House Excursion to various recreational centers within the University campus.
Meanwhile, as the Conference progresses, participants anticipate engaging discussions and collaborations that would contribute to advancing scientific innovations for sustainable development, economic prosperity, and enhanced security.
Highpoint of the ceremony was the presentation of awards to deserving retirees and some staff members of the College.
The ceremony was attended by eminent scholars within and outside of FUNAAB.
