FUNAAB is set to partner Sandia National Laboratories’ Global Chemical and Biological Security (SNL/GCBS), on behalf of the United States Department of State (DOS-BEP), and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s Biological Threat Reduction Programme (DTRA-BTRP), to create awareness on Biorisk Management (BRM) and to develop human capacity for BRM outreach and institutional implementation. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Bolanle Akeredolu-Ale said the training was to equip professionals on how to fight against biological agents and toxins, adding that the training was timely considering the fact that the world was currently going through the agonising impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Prof. Akeredolu added that the training was designed to establish, raise critical mass, balanced and sustainable cadre of BRM trainers across Nigeria by equipping trainees and professionals to be knowledgeable and apply BRM lessons, principles and techniques in the handling, storage and shipment of valuable biological materials and toxins in a safe manner and consistent with international standards. The DVC (Academic) appreciated the Acting Head, Department of Veterinary Microbiology, College of Veterinary Medicine (COLVET), Dr. Michael Agbaje, for facilitating the Trainers Development Programme (TDP) and also welcomed Major Inalegwu Ochai, Head, Pathology Laboratory, Nigeria Army Reference Hospital, Yaba, Lagos State, who would be working to expand BRM outreach to FUNAAB, as Dr. Agbaje thanked the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Major Ochai, and other participants attending the training programme.
