… FUNAAB’s Pro-Chancellor Charges Everyone to Embrace Farming

By Olasunkanmi Olajide & Wuraola Dada

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), His Royal Majesty, Oba Rasheed Ayotunde Olabomi, Odundun IV, Asoludero, the Aragbiji of Iragbiji Land, has urged Nigerians to take farming as a collective responsibility, stressing that national survival depends on food self-sufficiency.

Oba Olabomi made the call today, October 9, 2025, during a strategic inspection tour of FUNAAB’s agricultural projects and partner farms, where he declared that “we cannot feed ourselves in our religious houses without direct involvement in farming.”

He advised citizens to devote more time to agricultural ventures rather than spending excessive hours in religious centres, noting that the solution to hunger lies in collective participation in food production.

Accompanied by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, and members of the Governing Council, the Pro-Chancellor commended FUNAAB’s thriving partnerships with agripreneurs across the country, describing the University as a “beacon of high-impact collaboration revitalising agriculture in Nigeria.”

At Musarchy Farms, managed by Mr. Taiwo Ojediran, the delegation inspected plantations of Bell and Habanero pepper in Greenhouses, cassava, and the harvest-ready dwarf pawpaw plantation. Oba Olabomi applauded the farm’s synergy with FUNAAB and called on more Nigerians to engage in primary production to strengthen the food supply chain.

The Council also visited Harvest Field Farms, a 250-hectare FUNAAB-partnered enterprise, where the Pro-Chancellor urged farmers to embrace technology-driven solutions such as irrigation systems to address erratic rainfall and boost productivity.

At Auxano Farms and Produce Limited, cultivating 240 hectares of its 500-hectare land, the Ag. Director, Directorate of University Farms (DUFARMS), Dr. Emmanuel Bankole, stated that FUNAAB has been providing technical and infrastructural support at subsidised rates to the partners. The Pro-Chancellor, in turn, encouraged the farm to deepen mechanisation and adopt digital tools to enhance output.

The team also toured Zino Agritech Farms, co-managed by Mr. Deji Olomojoji and Dr. Theo Onadeko, where the Pro-Chancellor commended the management’s resilience despite weather challenges, urging further adoption of modern agricultural technologies.

Reaffirming FUNAAB’s role in driving the Federal Government’s food security agenda, Oba Olabomi stated, “FUNAAB is showing that the future of Nigerian agriculture lies in effective collaboration between academia and industry. Together, we can turn our farmlands into hubs of productivity and prosperity.”
