The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has begun the harvest of tomatoes from the Agronomic Iodine Biofortification Project, a groundbreaking initiative sponsored by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

Witnessing the harvest, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, lauded the project team for their dedication to contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2: Zero Hunger.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the importance of innovative agricultural projects in ensuring food security, improving nutrition, and fostering economic growth.

Recounting earlier developments, Prof. Akinola Popoola, a renowned Plant Pathologist and the Project Team Leader stated that the tomato plants would survive for up to 2 years in the Greenhouse, stressing that the initiative was designed to enhance income generation and promote better health through iodine-enriched tomatoes.

FUNAAB remains committed to leveraging innovative agricultural solutions to support national development and global goals.
